Hi,
I am always checking up on my favortie place on earth, and tonight I found your lovely Web site, Birdie. In 2001, my husband and I discovered the original Las Vegas and fell in love with the community and the land. We were so drawn to the area that we got jobs in Vegas, bought a house in Pendaries and moved there all within two months. I taught high school English at Robertson and writing at LCC.
Sadly, our time in the area was cut short by health problems that I began having shortly after we got there. After finding out I had Rheumatoid Arthritis and struggling to get good medical help, we returned to Wichita Falls, TX in 2003. The move back here has been the good for my health and it brought me back to a vital support system of friends and family, but I will never forget the magical time we spent in Las Vegas. We continue to visit yearly and someday hope to retire or at least have a second home in the area.
BTW-Through aggressive treatment with a Rheumatologist, my RA is under control.
Thank you for adding substance and flavor to my searches for info on Vegas. I have added your site to my favorites folder entitled "Dreams."

Well dandt, I don't think we have a lot engineers here. Most of the employment seems to be in mental health (state hospital is located here), education, and the usual government jobs. We do have a lot of restaurants here that seem to hire occasionally. You can access the classified section of our local paper at www.lasvegasoptic.com and check it out for yourself. We don't seem to have much farming here anymore, except a few brave individuals that strike out on their own. What is it that draws you to Las Vegas?

Hiya! My husband is a new professor at Highlands, and we are moving from Vancouver, Canada to Las Vegas in August. We are New Mexican/Canadians and have lived in NM for most of our lives - and we are so happy to be coming 'home' to green chile, blue skies and warm smiles. We are looking for rental housing for our first year or so - a sweet place with lots of light, space, charm - 2-3 bedrooms with kind neighbours, yard/garden possibilities (no dogs).

Can anyone help? Thanks. Love this forum, and ADORE your blog, Birdie. LV feels like home, already.

Hi, everyone! I'm Douglas from Mississippi. A few years ago I bought some acreage in the Gallinas area. Nearing retirement I'm thinking of making the place my home for part of the year. I love the mountains and the city of Las Vegas. Looking forward to a visit soon, maybe to talk with a builder about beginning construction on a house. I'll be staying at the Plaza. If anyone can give me a lead on a green builder with experience and ecofriendly services/alternative energy sources I'd be grateful.

I read a review that sounded interesting of a novel, The Night Journal, by Elizabeth Crook, and to my great surprise the first page reads: "February 12, 1902, Las Vegas, New Mexico". A lot of it takes place at the Plaza Hotel and Montezuma Castle; historical mystery, pretty good read.

Hi skintchicken. Archaeologists probably have a hard time finding work outside of teaching or possibly working for the state. There seem to be plenty of apartments north of town.
I think online yellowpages will list them. For groceries we have Ludy's, an old-fashioned market with butcher and bakery, a meat market, 2 Lowes, and a WalMart. There doesn't seem to be any street crime here, but petty-theft and graffiti are around. Only reason to have a gun is for hunting, though sometimes the local banks, politicians and newspapers seem ready to have a shootout!

hello everyone. first i would like to say that this is a nice site and i'm glad i found it. my wife and i live in memphis, tn. i am considering going to nmhu and wanted to ask a few questions before i decided to move here or not.

my first question is about jobs. my wife is an archaeologist. are there any jobs in that field in the lvnm area? i work at a warehouse and am cool with any kind of general labor work, but part time b/c i'll be in school.

my second question is about housing. are there any apartments in lvnm? if so, what is the going rent for a 2 bedroom apartment?

are there any grocery stores in lvnm or do you have to drive to another town for food?

what are the gun laws in lvnm? can i carry a handgun legally? do any of you think one would need a gun for any reason in the area? how common is theft, car break-ins, mugging, assault, etc? i'm from memphis so you have to understand that i am very paranoid about safety issues. my wife and i were robbed at gunpoint last december in our apartment parking lot, etc.

i think this is it for now. thanks in advance for all of your answers and help!

Hi Bucky, I can say the train ride is dramatic and wonderful. I took Amtrak from Kalamazoo through Chicago and remember the Las Vegas stop (if you go as far as ABQ it used to be where they wash the train windows).

Hi, y'all! I am going to be a visitor in a few weeks and look forward to staying at the Plaza Hotel and eating green chili while admiring your town. I live in Tucson, but fled cold Michigan winters 30 years ago (Detroit area, Lansing, Grand Haven, Kalamazoo). Summers are getting hotter here or maybe it only feels that way because I seem to have power surges as I age ;> The elevation in LV should give me a 15 degree respite from the heat, and a bit of time to spend with my significant other who is travelling for his job a lot these days. He visited LV a few months ago and is sure I will really like it! I lived in Bisbee, AZ some years back and I think it is a smaller version, maybe a little funkier, of your town. Bisbee is a European looking former copper mining town with a lot of artists and a lot of sliding-down-the-hills mining shacks and very few good jobs. The challenge always seems to be how to attract good new residents with money and energy without losing the charms of a town where people know each other and there isn't "a Starbucks on every corner".
Looking forward to our visit and maybe meeting some of you!

Hi Hermit-speak,
You know Decatur?! It's a tiny place. We feel lucky that we found it when we moved to ATL 20 years ago. It has the small-town feel--you can't go to the grocery or post office without seeing someone you know. But if you want big town concerts, shopping, museums, ATL is six miles away. if you want big town sports, you can always rooy for the visiting teams.
We are on a longish car trip, we plan to spend two weeks in New Mexico, one of them in Santa fe. I found Las Vegas when I was researching the trip. There was a great feature in the NY Times travel section. Around the same time, my husband was researching the locations from the movie version of No Country for Old Men. Voila! Harmonic convergence of interests.
We only spent the one night in LV but we enjoyed it very much. This morning we explored the newer side of the city before heading out to Santa Fe. I am glad we spent the night and did not merely visit as a day trip from Santa Fe. There is a lot to see and do and we enjoyed talking to some of the local residents at the bar in the Plaza Hotel. very friendly folks.
No sign of the ghost. We were in room 313 but I slept very soundly after a few cocktails. the ghost would have had a hard time getting my attention.

Hi. My name is Mary and I am a tourist in Las Vegas, posting from the Plaza Hotel. This is a lovely website and forum. Congratulations. I am from Decatur, GA (near Atlanta.) We have a nice town square, too. This afternoon we took a stroll around the plaza and tonight we will have dinner here at the hotel. I hope to see a little more of Las Vegas tomorrow and then we continue on to Santa Fe. This looks like a very nice town.

I go to West Las Vegas High School. Does he like music? I'd suggest getting him into Choir and/or Band. It's a blast. I'd say send him to West. Believe it or not, it is actually much "nicer" here. There's this general attitude towards West for its...past mistakes and student behavior problems, BUT, it is definitely better now than what people assume it is. Yes, we do have our incidents, as does every school. However, West has a sense of...tolerance in it, a respect for things that Robertson does not share, save for very few individual people. Take this example:

State Fair Parade, in Albuquerque. Our band marches on and finishes the parade. In respect, courtesy, and as a sign of friendship, the entire marching band waits for Robertson to make that finishing turn at the parades end. We cheer them on and clap for them as they march by, smiling at them, despite our exhaustion. Every single parade that we both are in, we wait for them if we finish before them (it all depends where you are placed at the start of the parade). Robertson, despite this, has never done the same for us. They always scatter and leave just as we finish. For one of the parades here in town, as we finished with our final song, Robertsons percussion (drum) section were PLAYING as we were. That's like, yelling and dancing during a movie, or at a formal concert.

Their arrogance is quite annoying, and disheartening. We all feel so insulted and...betrayed with every single disrespectful act. And we never return with our own disrespect; we always respect them, despite our will to crush them (we will when we win 1rst again! It's quite the story on how we both won first...but I may post it later).

West is best, we have good teachers and good students. Though there are those few students to avoid, well, leave them alone, and they'll leave you alone. Also, discipline is better here; no pajamas at school here, unlike a Robertson.

And also, if he's home-schooled, his social skills will suffer, and that will lead to being picked on. Let him breath. Home-schooling will just seclude him from activities like sports, art, and Music. More importantly, Music. But more important than that; Education.

Bucky, I have no idea if train or plane is better. ABQ is the airport, but you may want to check prices for flights into Santa Fe. Every once in a great while there may be a better deal (rare, though, I'm sure).

The train ride is supposed to be incredibly beautiful. My guess is that it costs as much as a flight, but I am not sure.

The Upper Peninsula is gorgeous! Very different from here, but just as lovely.

JLA, Welcome!

It's great to have a younger person here. :) If Vegas is your hometown, then you know more about it than I do. Age doesn't grant a person knowledge, just the ability to process that knowledge a little better, perhaps. I would love to hear your impressions of town. What school district are you in? My two boys are in West, at Rio Gallinas School. Next year, my older son is moving on to High School, and I'm having a terrible time figuring out what to do with him - Robertson? West? Home School? It's a conundrum.

Best wishes to you!
Birdie

Hello, and good day!

I stumbled upon this site a few months ago, and I really like your stories, Birdie. They reveal many good values; what it means to be human, from fun moments to sad times. I find your stories very interesting, and I admire your love for this small town. A lot of us teenagers say this place is boring; personally, I love this town. Indeed, it does get a little boring sometimes, but, it's completely bearable. There's always things to observe and discover about this town.

It's very heart warming to read your stories, and your descriptions of Las Vegas, a highly ignored town by the general public of the U.S.

Anyway, seeing as I'm not an adult yet and I have little knowledge about my hometown and 'adult issues', I have little purpose on these forums, but I'm sure I can learn a bit from reading.

Anyway, I hope you have a day!

What do you guys think is the best (and cheapest) way to get there from Michigan? Fly to Albuquerque then rent a car? Or take the train there from here? Is Albuquerque the closest main airport? Any suggestions would be great!!

I have two Michiganders in my home at the moment - both lived a long time in East Lansing and both born in Flint. If you are from that area you should look them up and they can tell you all about Las Vegas.

Some friends of mine who own land down by Madrid say plenty of filming was done within eyeshot of their land. Then of course the Rio Grande Gorge scenes. These areas certainly are scenic and worth a visit if you traveled all this way - though not on the original list of places the Movie fans are looking for.

Hi Paul!

I hope you get to visit Vegas soon! I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I know what it's like to lose close family like that; it's always tough, even when you expect it. The passing of a generation is difficult, too.

My daughter is graduating from UCSC and pursuing a nursing degree as well. She wants the flexibility that a nursing career can provide. There are definitely jobs in health care in this crazy town, so maybe you will get the chance to move back. :)

Best wishes,

Hi Bucky!

Welcome to My Tiny Vegas! I'm so glad you posted your questions.

Let's see - I know more people from the Detroit area than I have fingers! Can you believe it? I had a "Polish Party" a few months ago and over half of the guests ended up being from Michigan. It was truly strange and wonderful. My sister, in fact, lives in Lansing, so I, too, have a Michigan connection. :)

I love Las Vegas for the reasons you stated in your last post - we have no Starbucks or Applebees. This is a slower pace of life, and people treat each other with respect. I can be completely myself here, and not worry about having to follow cultural conventions. It sounds like you would fit right in.

NMHU is a lovely school. I know quite a few of the faculty. There are always rooms to rent in town; I don't think you would have a difficult time finding a place to stay.

I have to say that southern Colorado isn't much like New Mexico at all. The terrain is different. Once you drive over the Raton pass, it's another world.

I love New Mexico and can't imagine living anywhere else. I'm a happy transplant.
